Mountaineering, The Freedom of The Hills.
Edition : Mountaineers Books
Une lecture recommandée par Henri :
One of the most comprehensive instructional references for climbing education, the 9th edition presents techniques and maneuvers that combine the know-how and experience of generations of climbers. As a fundamental resource, The Freedom of the Hills compiles best practices skillfully confirmed by members of prominent mountain guide organizations such as the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) and the American Alpine Club (AAC).
The book is extremely comprehensive, and most of the maneuvers I use are covered in it. What I appreciate most about The Freedom of the Hills is the availability of precise and directed information, which allows me to confirm maneuvers directly in the field or adjust my approach in contexts that require adaptation.
The Freedom of the Hills covers not only the best safety practices in climbing but also risk management in alpine, avalanche, and glacier environments, among others. I learned the basics of these disciplines that I have practiced less frequently, in addition to confirming and reminding myself of fundamental outdoor principles that tend to be forgotten as more specialized experiences and knowledge accumulate.
The book is presented as a reference for beginner and intermediate climbers. However, I believe it contains information relevant to a more advanced category of climbers in most chapters. I was surprised by the rigor and complexity of certain sections, especially when considering that novice climbers might attempt the maneuvers they describe.
The instruction is presented in alignment with their complexity and typical learning progression. For instance, avalanche safety techniques are not introduced before explaining how to dress and navigate in winter outdoor conditions. The basics of belaying are covered before self-rescue techniques, simpler disciplines before more complex ones, and so on. This approach makes it easier to effectively interpret more developed information once the foundational concepts are well understood.
L’objectif de The Freedom of The Hills est clair : être le guide définitif et évolutif en matière de montagnes et d’escalade.
As mentioned earlier, the guide is supported by members of prominent mountaineering organizations such as the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), the American Alpine Club (AAC), and the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). It is also the result of modifications and updates that have led to several editions since the 1960s. Therefore, the guide is a robust source, historically and professionally validated.
Although their black-and-white style and somewhat simplistic appearance may not make them a reference in terms of graphic design, the illustrations are clear and provide an excellent understanding of the textual information they are connected to. This aligns perfectly with the expectations and educational goals they serve.
